The month of December in Tortuguero is quite rainy, something important to note, as the Caribbean has the opposite climate to the rest of the country.

There are up to 14 days of rain during the month, with a fairly high average humidity.

As for visitation, the first few days are fairly quiet, largely because most tourists travel more towards the end of the month, as well as January, February and March.

Sea turtles in December

During the month of December sea turtles cannot be seen, as the sea turtle season runs from July to October.

The other activities such as the boat tour through the canals, hikes in the national park or any of the hotels' reserves, the canoe or kayak tour through the canals and the hike on the Tortuguero Hill are still operating normally.

It is important to point out that even though there are no sea turtles, Tortuguero is a destination that offers much more, and its flora and fauna are impressively rich and diverse.

The amount of animal species that can be seen is admirable, among these, alligators, crocodiles, river turtles, poison dart frogs, many birds, sloths, several species of monkeys and with a lot of luck, some large mammals, among these perhaps a tapir or Jaguar.
